What a dead man’s switch actually is
The defining feature is inversion. Almost every safety product you own waits for you to trigger it: you press the button, you make the call, you tap the alert. That works for situations where you are able to act, and does nothing at all for the situations where you are not — which are the serious ones.
A dead man’s switch reverses the default. Nothing happening is the alarm. You do a small, cheap thing at intervals to say “still here”, and the absence of that thing is what causes action.
The idea is old and boring, which is a recommendation. It has three parts:
- An interval. How long silence has to last before it counts.
- A signal. The thing you do to reset the clock.
- A consequence. What happens when the clock runs out.
Why pets are the case that needs one
Most dead man’s switch tools are built around information — release my passwords, send this letter, publish this file. Those are all things that can wait. A dog cannot.
Pets have three properties that make them unusually suited to this mechanism, and unusually badly served by everything else:
- They are behind a locked door. No amount of concern from a distance solves it. Somebody has to physically arrive.
- They cannot raise an alarm. A person alone and unwell might eventually be heard. An animal’s distress is contained by the same walls that keep it safe.
- The clock is short and invisible. Water, medication, and simple need to go outside all have deadlines measured in hours, and none of them are visible to anyone outside.
And the delay is not caused by cruelty or carelessness. It is caused by an entirely reasonable reluctance to over-react to an unanswered message — which is exactly the judgement a switch removes, by deciding in advance that silence past a certain point means go.
How a check-in works in practice
In use, the whole thing is about two seconds a day. You open an app and tap a button, or you answer a notification. The clock resets.
The parts worth thinking about are the edges:
- Where the clock lives. It should be on a server, not on your phone. A countdown running on the device is defeated by the device being off, broken, or out of battery — which is precisely the scenario it exists to detect.
- Grace. There should be a gap between “missed” and “acted on”, because people are in meetings and on planes.
- Escalation to you first. The system should try hard to reach you before it reaches anybody else — and through more than one channel, since the reason you missed it may be that notifications are off.
- A clear last warning. One unmistakable message saying it is about to contact people, with time to stop it.
What should happen after a missed check-in
The consequence is the part worth being opinionated about. A good sequence:
- Remind you before the deadline, quietly.
- Try you again after it passes, through a different channel — a text rather than another push notification.
- Warn you unambiguously that your contacts are about to be told, with a way to stop it in one action.
- Contact people who agreed in advance — and tell them something useful: that there is an animal at home, what it needs, and what you asked them to do.
- Keep trying the next person if the first does not respond, rather than stopping at one unanswered text.
Consent is not a detail. Your contacts should have accepted the role before anything happens, not discovered it at 11pm. A person who agreed knows what the message means and what to do; a person who did not assumes it is a scam and deletes it.
And it should stop there. The step after “contact the people you chose” is contacting emergency services, and software should not take it. It cannot tell a flat battery from a medical emergency, and a false dispatch to a home is not a harmless error — it consumes a genuinely scarce resource and can put whoever is inside in a frightening position. A responsible design ends the automated part at people who opted in. If a human being at a company reviews unresolved cases and decides what to do next, that is a person exercising judgement, which is different in kind and worth knowing about.

The limits — read this part
A dead man’s switch is a notification mechanism. It is worth being blunt about what that does and does not buy you.
- It does not create helpers. If nobody on your list is willing or able to come, the switch will reliably tell the wrong people at the right time. The list is the product; the software is the trigger.
- It cannot open your door. Access is a physical problem and needs a physical answer — a key, a code, a neighbour. Solve that separately or the alert arrives and nothing follows.
- It will produce false alarms. You will fall asleep, lose signal, go somewhere without coverage. Design your interval and your contacts on the assumption that this will happen a few times a year, and treat that as the cost of it working when it is real.
- It is not a medical alert system. It notices silence, not falls, not symptoms, not distress. If you need something that detects a medical event, that is a different product category.
- It only covers the gap you configured. A weekly interval means up to a week of silence before anything happens.
None of that argues against having one. It argues for having one and the rest of a proper emergency plan — people, a key, and written instructions — because the switch is the part that starts the plan, not the plan itself.
Setting one up well
- Set the interval from your pet’s shortest need, not from what feels comfortable. Medication decides it if there is any.
- Choose contacts by distance first. Someone who can be at your door tonight beats someone who loves you more and lives four hours away.
- Tell them what you have done, in person or by message, so the eventual text is recognised rather than doubted.
- Solve the key before you finish. This is the step people leave for later and never do.
- Put the care details where the alert can carry them — see what a sitter needs to know, which is the same list.
- Test it once. Deliberately let one check-in lapse while you are sitting at home with your phone, and watch what actually happens. It is the only way to know what your contacts will receive, and it is worth the mild embarrassment of the warning text.
Common questions
- What is a dead man’s switch app?
- An app that expects a signal from you at intervals you set, and does something you configured if the signal does not arrive. For pet owners the "something" is contacting people who can go to your home. The name comes from railway and industrial safety controls that stop a machine when the operator releases them.
- How often should I have to check in?
- Match it to the shortest thing your pet cannot miss. If your dog takes medication twice a day, a 24-hour interval is too slow. If nothing is time-critical, a daily check-in is a reasonable default: frequent enough to matter, rare enough that you will not start ignoring it. An interval you find annoying is one you will eventually turn off, which makes it worse than a longer one you keep.
- What happens if I just forget to check in?
- A well-designed switch makes that cheap. It should remind you before the deadline, warn you unmistakably before it contacts anyone, and let you cancel at any point. If the first thing you learn about a missed check-in is your friend arriving at your door, the design is wrong and you will stop using it.
- Does a dead man’s switch call 911?
- It should not, and you should be wary of one that claims to. Software cannot assess whether an emergency exists, false dispatches carry real cost and real risk, and an automated call to emergency services on the strength of an unanswered notification is a decision no algorithm should be making. Contacting people who chose to be contacted is the appropriate action.
- What if my phone dies or I lose it?
- Then you cannot check in, and the switch does what it was built to do — it treats silence as silence and contacts your people. That is a false alarm, and it is the correct failure direction: a system that assumed you were fine whenever it could not reach you would be useless precisely when it mattered. Look for one that also lets you confirm you are okay from a browser or by replying to a text, so a dead battery does not have to become a phone call to your neighbour.
